Privacy Notice

Handy Home Upgrades Last updated: 10 September 2026

Handy Home Upgrades ("we", "us", "our") is a UK-based sole trader blog reviewing and comparing home products. This notice explains what personal data we collect when you visit (handyhomeupgrades.co.uk), why we collect it, and what rights you have. It's written to comply with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

If you have any questions about this notice or how your data is handled, contact us at contact@handyhomeupgrades.co.uk.

1. Who we are

Handy Home Upgrades is operated by Sam Chaffey, trading as Handy Home Upgrades, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom. For the purposes of data protection law, we are the "data controller" of the personal data described in this notice.

2. What data we collect and why

a) Newsletter sign-ups

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address (and, if you provide it, your name) via Hostinger Reach, our email marketing platform. Hostinger processes and stores this data on our behalf to send you newsletter emails.

  • Legal basis: your consent, given when you sign up.

  • Retention: we keep your details until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Every email includes an unsubscribe link.

  • Withdrawing consent: you can unsubscribe at any time; this won't affect the lawfulness of processing before you withdrew consent.

b) Contacting us

If you email us or use a contact form on the site, we collect whatever information you provide — typically your name, email address, and message content — so we can respond to you.

  • Legal basis: legitimate interest (responding to enquiries) or consent, depending on context.

  • Retention: we keep correspondence only as long as needed to deal with your query and any related follow-up, then delete or archive it.

c) Site analytics

We use Hostinger's built-in website analytics (hPanel) to understand how visitors use the site — for example, pages viewed, approximate location, device/browser type, referring website, and IP address. This data is aggregated and used to improve the site; we don't use it to identify you individually.

  • Legal basis: legitimate interest in understanding and improving our website.

d) Affiliate links (including Amazon Associates)

Some links on Handy Home Upgrades are affiliate links — including links to Amazon through the Amazon Associates (Amazon.co.uk) programme, and links via the AWIN and Webgains affiliate networks. If you click one of these links and make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When you click an affiliate link, you are taken to a third-party retailer's website (e.g. Amazon). That retailer, or the affiliate network facilitating the link, typically sets a tracking cookie to record that the referral came from our site, so we can be credited with the commission. We don't see your payment details or personal account information on the retailer's site — that's handled entirely by the retailer under their own privacy policy, which we'd encourage you to review (e.g. Amazon's Privacy Notice).

3. Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device. We use the following categories:

Type Purpose Set by Essential Basic site functionality (e.g. security, remembering cookie preferences) Our hosting platform Analytics Understanding site traffic and usage Hostinger hPanel analytics Affiliate tracking Attributing purchases to us after you click an outbound link Amazon Associates, AWIN, Webgains (only once you click through to their site)

You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time. Blocking cookies may affect some site functionality, though you'll still be able to read our content. Where required, we'll ask for your consent to non-essential cookies via a cookie banner before they're set.

4. Who we share your data with

We share data with the service providers who help us run the site and newsletter:

  • Hostinger — website hosting, analytics, and newsletter delivery (Hostinger Reach)

  • Amazon Associates, AWIN, Webgains — affiliate networks, which receive referral/tracking data only when you click an affiliate link

We do not sell your personal data to anyone.

5. International data transfers

Some of our service providers may process data outside the UK/EEA (for example, Amazon is a US-based company). Where this happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards recognised under UK GDPR, such as Standard Contractual Clauses, to ensure your data remains protected.

6. Your rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you

  • Rectify inaccurate data

  • Erase your data ("right to be forgotten")

  • Restrict or object to certain processing

  • Data portability (receive your data in a portable format)

  • Withdraw consent at any time (e.g. by unsubscribing from the newsletter)

To exercise any of these rights, email contact@handyhomeupgrades.co.uk. We'll respond within one month.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), at ico.org.uk.

7. Children's privacy

Handy Home Upgrades is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16.

8. Changes to this notice

We may update this notice from time to time — for example, if we start using a new tool or service. The "last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent change. We'd encourage you to check back periodically.
